FCSD1 Safety
The safety of students
attending Fremont County School District 1 is of
paramount importance. Not only are safety
features built into the district’s facilities,
but safety training is provided to all staff for
various emergency and evacuation scenarios.
Safety begins with a
healthy learning environment for all students
that focuses on building cleanliness and
ensuring that each school building does not fall
into disrepair. Each building, including
landscaping, is regularly maintained.
The district also
promotes a philosophy that each district
employee is an educator, and models appropriate
behavior. Safety drills are conducted on a
regular basis. Whether the drill is a typical
fire drill where the building is evacuated, or
for any eventuality from a chemical spill to an
intruder alert, district staff is schooled on
safety procedures detailed in a crisis plan,
including relocating students to another
building.
The drills also include
such occurrences as a school lockdown or a “stay
put” drill—all designed to protect both students
and staff in the event of an emergency or
potential threat. An example of a “stay put”
drill is when district officials invite law
enforcement with K-9 units into school buildings
for a sweep of lockers and public areas in
search of dangerous contraband. Staff and
students in this instance “stay put” in their
closed classrooms until the search is completed
and the K-9 units leave the facility.
