2009 Report to the Community

Proficiency Assessments for Wyoming Students (PAWS) is the assessment system developed by the Wyoming Department of Education in cooperation with Harcourt Assessment, Inc. PAWS assessments cover reading, writing, math and science.

In reading, the percentage of FCSD1 students who
tested proficient and advanced averaged 63 percent.
A child’s 5th grade reading proficiency
is a critical indicator of future academic success.
In mathematics, FCSD1 8th and 11th grade students
tested higher than the state average and the district’s
overall average for students performing at the proficient
and advanced levels totaled 53.7 percent.

The most room for growth occurred in writing and science, where FCSD1 students in five of seven grades fell below the state average. Only the 11th grade writing and 11th grade science test results met or exceeded the state average. The test measures how proficient students really are in traditional writing skills, but results also reflect how seriously students take the exam.
