Be a Wise Health Care Consumer
Consumers are beginning to understand the direct connection between living a healthy lifestyle and reduced medical expenses, and are beginning to view health as an economic asset. Consumer Driven Health Care is based on the premise that the consumer is gaining information, taking responsibility and becoming more in touch with the true cost of health care.
How does this affect you? Health Plans include coverage for preventive care. In other words, the deductible doesn’t have to be met just to have a routine physical. In addition, recommended preventive screenings are also covered. Getting recommended preventive checkups and screenings are extremely beneficial for your overall health. You develop a better relationship with your doctor, better manage any chronic conditions and allow your doctor to identify possible health problems early, when treatment is generally more effective and less costly. Improving your health through preventive care will also save you money in the future, from diseases or health conditions you prevented.
- Always follow your doctor’s instructions – Ignoring instructions regarding your medication, for example, can result in additional prescription costs, extra trips to the doctor or even hospitalization
- Use in-network providers – When you use an out-of-network provider, you will likely pay more.
- Visit the emergency room for emergencies only – If it’s after office hours, use an urgent care center for a cold, minor sprain, earache or anything that is not life-threatening.
- Check your bill – Insurance companies and hospitals sometimes make billing errors, so keep track of what you owe.
- Understand your plan – Check your insurance company’s website to make sure you aren’t paying for services that you may not need, such as acupuncture or chiropractic care.
- Brush and floss – The cost of periodontal disease treatment can range from $200 to $2,000 per procedure.
- Relax – Over 60 percent of doctor visits are related to stress. Studies show that relaxation techniques can effectively control anxiety, enhance the immune system and reduce conditions such as high blood pressure, muscle tension and chronic pain.
- Quit smoking – On average, smokers cost an extra $1,600 a year in health care costs.
- Brown bag it – Home-cooked food contains 20 percent less fat than restaurant foods, and can save you over $1,000 a year.
