Hello Tiger Family,
Welcome back to the 2nd half of the 2017-18 school year. We were definitely excited to see your students again and get started with another incredible semester at LVHS. Teachers returned early to finish grading for 1st semester and prepare materials and curriculum for the 2nd semester. Report cards will be mailed home at the first part of this week and with it families need to remember a couple things:
1st — Students not meeting the proficiency level in any single standard will receive an "I" for their overall grade and the teacher will get with them to complete an Individual Learning Plan, essentially a contract that states what the student needs to do to turn the "I" into a letter grade. Receiving an "I" on a report card does not necessarily indicate that the overall class grade was an F, but it does indicate that at least in one standard your student has not yet demonstrated proficiency. For a lot of students we understand that it will take more time and more attempts to be able to demonstrate proficiency on our rigorous standards and thus it is all part of the process. For some students, it remains a motivation piece, where teachers may be waiting for that final assignment or two. Please consult with your student and their teacher to get clarification if needed.
- 2nd — Only letter grades of A, B, or C earn students credit. Any other letter would mean student does not earn credit and in most instances will be placed on an ILP as stated above. In a few circumstances it is deemed that student has missed most of the content and therefore teacher requests student to repeat the entire class.
Students placed on ILP's were notified on Friday, via their SRB schedule where students were placed with the teacher who needs them to complete an ILP. Students with multiple ILP's were prioritized by class and length it would take to complete. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know.
In December we received notification that LVHS was named to the AP Honor Roll by the College Board. We earned this honor by increasing access to the AP tests to all of our students, including our minority students while also increase the percentage of students earning a 3 or better on the tests. We were the only school in the state to earn the honor, just 1 of 11 in our 6 border states, and 1 of 447 schools to earn the honor nationally. I will also let you know that although I can't release details yet, we have another piece of very exciting news that I will be able to release at the end of the month! We are very grateful to our entire Tiger community for putting us into the position to be recognized with great achievements at so many levels!
Our winter sports returned to full action this week with all teams on the road, but with all of them having great success! You will get your first chance to see our boys basketball team this Saturday as they will join the girls team in hosting Rawlins. Swim plays host on Friday to Rawlins as well. Everyone else is on the road but I do want to preview that Wrestling will host its Lander Invite January 19 and 20th and will actually host a dual on the 18th as well. Hope to see you all cheering on the Tigers soon. On Tuesday, we will also host a Poetry Out Loud Contest at 6pm in the LVHS Auditorium. This is a new event, started by LVHS Language Arts Instructor Brooke Davidson and it has caught a lot of interest with some very talented students.
Our monthly PIE meeting will be on Tuesday at 12pm in the LVHS Popo Agie room. If you have not been to one of these but would like to know more about the happenings of LVHS, this is a great opportunity to stay informed. Our monthly celebration normally scheduled for the second Wednesday of the month, will happen on the third Wednesday of this month due to the holiday break. Please make plans on coming to see this incredible event on Wednesday, January 17th at 2:00 PM.
I hope that everyone has a very happy new year and please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you as we roll into the second semester.
