What is a variance?

Fremont #1 appreciates the value of parental choice, and understands the need for flexibility.  With such a large number of school districts relatively close to one another in Fremont County, some parents may choose to move their students into another school district (perhaps in the community where they work).

A variance is a request to move a student from their home district (the school district where their primary residence is located) to another school district.  Variances are not automatically approved – a student is appraised by the receiving district before they are approved to attend in that district.

Many factors, including student performance, are weighed before a variance is approved for a student outside the Fremont #1 boundaries to attend our district.

Procedure?

These are the procedures for Fremont #1.  Other Fremont school district procedures may vary.

To start a variance procedure if you live OUTSIDE of Fremont #1 and want to attend school within Fremont #1:

  1. Pick up a variance form:  Variance request form is available at the Central Office, 863 Sweetwater in Lander.

  2. Complete the form: Fill in all information and obtain signatures of home district principal and superintendent (the district you are leaving).  Also attach copies of attendance, behavior, and grades.

  3. Return form: Completed paperwork can be returned either to the Central Office or to the school office at the school you wish to attend.  Your paperwork goes to the Fremont #1 building principal for review and approval, then on to the district superintendent for final approval.

  4. Notification: You are notified whether the variance is approved or not.  If yes, a copy of the form is sent to your home district

Conversely, to start a variance procedure if you live INSIDE Fremont #1 and want to attend school in another district within the county:

  1. Pick up a variance form:  Variance request form is available at the Central Office, 863 Sweetwater in Lander.

  2. Complete the form: Fill in all information and obtain signatures from the district principal and superintendent of Fremont #1.  Depending on the requirements of the other Fremont county district, you may also need to provide additional information such as attendance, behavior, and grades.

  3. Send form: Completed paperwork should be sent, in accordance with the procedures in the other school district, to their Central Office or to the school office at the school you wish to attend.  The other district will review paperwork and notify you  if they approve of the variance.

  4. Follow-up: Once you have an approved variance, you MUST complete the variance form every year, and check the box indicating previous approval (no signatures required) and return to the Fremont #1 Central Office.

Questions regarding this procedure, or variances in general, may be directed to the school's office or to the Central Admin office.
