Hello LMS Families and Friends

Happy Fall!!  We have officially been in school for a month now.  I am proud of the way our students are working in all of their classes.  I have been visiting classrooms on my walkthroughs and I love hear students' tell me what they are working on.  They are explaining their learning targets and what their proficiency scales look like, it's awesome!

Lander Middle School transitioned into the Standards Based Grading (SBG) practices this school year.  We began this transition last year and did it slowly over the course of each trimester so we would be ready for full implementation.  The gradebook in Parent Portal is live so you should be able to see how your child is progressing through each content level standard.  I will be hosting our October PIE meeting for any parents that would like to know more about Standards Based Grading.  The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 9th at 6:00 p.m.  I am also attaching our Standards Based Grading handbook as a resource for you.  As always, feel free to contact me with any questions.  FCSD #1 Standards Based Grading Handbook

This week, we are wrapping up STAR testing.  All sixth through eighth grade students are taking the STAR test in Math and Reading.  STAR tests are short (30 minutes) tests that provide teachers with different learning data.  The tests are adaptive, meaning they adjust to each answer your child provides.  We use these tests to identify what students already know and what they are ready to learn next, monitor student growth and determine where students may need additional support.  We will STAR test on the district assessment calendar two times this year  (Fall and Spring).

LMS had a great time last week participating in the Homecoming festivities.  It's always a lot of fun to see our students and staff dressed up for Spirit Week.  Student Council created our float this year based on The Last Jedi and our 8th grade band students had the opportunity to march with the LVHS marching band.  Here are a few pictures from Friday.

WYTopp results will be released this Wednesday, September 26th.  We will be mailing home individual score reports this Thursday for students that took WYTopp at LMS 2017-2018.

We will hold our first school wide PBIS assembly this Friday.  We will recognize our students of the week for the first four weeks of school.  We will also hear from our Student Council candidates that are running for President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  They will each have an opportunity to present a 3 minute speech and then the student body will vote to elect students to office.

This Friday will also be our first school dance.  The dance will be held in the LMS gym from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00  Doors will open at 5:50 p.m. and the cost of admission is $2.00.  If you are interested in chaperoning, please contact Mrs. Jensen at

Enjoy our lovely fall weather and have a great week.
