Good morning, LMS Families!

It is early and I am sitting here in the quiet, enjoying a cup of coffee. I love this time of morning – when the sun is just starting to come up and everything is shaking the sleep off.

Here's what happening this week:

From Mrs. Jensen: It's that time of year again where our community comes together to help those in need. Sign ups are open for:

  • Angel Tree: Our annual Angel Tree will be up and running again this year. If you and your family are struggling this year to buy presents, please consider applying for our Angel Tree. Parents complete a short questionnaire about their children's clothing sizes, likes, and needs and we gather the information and put it on a tree in our lobby. Community members then shop for the kids and LMS wraps the presents for the families! All names will be kept confidential. To qualify, you must have a student enrolled at Lander Middle School. Applications can be found in the front office or counseling office. Applications are due on Dec. 7th. Please complete and return as soon as you can. If you have any questions, please email or call Mrs. Jensen
  • Christmas Baskets: If you are worried about feeding your family over the long Winter break, please consider completing the Christmas Basket application from the Elks. Applications can be found at the LMS front desk. This will enable a family to receive a basket full of food for the holiday.

Service Learning Project:  Students are planning and involved in service learning projects throughout the school.  They are still looking for donations for our adopted school in Lynn Haven, Florida – Merritt Brown Middle School.  MBMS was completely devastated during Hurricane Michael and are in need of basic school supplies.  They are currently sharing a campus with Mosley High School, where middle school students attend classes from 1pm to 6pm.  We will take donations this week and will be mailing our care packages early next week.

Session III Activities:  Students can begin signing up for Session III activities starting Monday, Dec 3rd.  Activities include:  Boy's Basketball (7th and 8th grade); Nordic Skiing (6th, 7th, and 8th grades) and Art Club (6th, 7th, and 8th grade).  The pay to play fee is $20 and in order to participate in athletics, students must have a current physical on file.

After School Tutoring:  LMS offers after school tutoring every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

7th Grade Vision/Hearing Screenings:  Nurses Brittany Cox and Chelsey Mullins will be conducting the annual vision and hearing screenings for all 7th grade students on Monday and Thursday this week.  Parents will be notified of any concerns.

Lander Medical Clinic Visit:  Dr. Shalini Forbis, Heather Sanders, PA and Julia Fairbanks, PA will be visiting the LMS PE classes on Tuesday to talk to students about mental and physical wellness.

Classroom News:

Babb/Schaff Health Class is working on the decision making process. We have discussed how values, culture, media, and other factors effect our decisions. The kids made a comic strip demonstrating the six steps of a good decision. This week we will be critically evaluating scenarios to determine the best outcomes and then students will create their own scenarios for others to solve.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Julie Shanley, LMS Principal
