The ELA Resource Team is the focus of this week's Spotlight. This team of special education stars support the literacy needs of Sabers in the classroom,s well as in intervention classes throughout the day. Special Education Teachers, Mrs. West and Mrs. Red Bow, meet regularly with our general education ELA team to align their small group instruction to what's happening in the classroom, ensuring students are prepared to meet grade level learning targets. They both work to differentiate tough concepts to meet the unique needs of all their learners. Ms. Shiers and Mr. Binns , ELA Resource Paraprofessionals, work with students one on one and in small groups to provide an additional layer of support. Our ELA Resource Team understands that strong relationships lay the foundation for student achievement and are constantly adapting their instruction to help students grow. We are grateful for their hard work and commitment to helping all students achieve at high levels!

NOLS is offering a backpacking course to rising 8th -12th grade students with tribal affiliation. The NOLS Expedition Wind River will be a 6-night backpacking trip (August 2-8th) for up to 15 Indigenous students from Fremont County/Wind River Reservation who are interested in learning backpacking and backcountry living skills as well as leadership skills. One of the NOLS instructors will be Elsie Freland, an enrolled Northern Arapaho member.

Students will spend 6 days in the Wind River Mountains exploring new places every day. There will be a chance to climb high ridges and possibly summit a mountain peak. Students will learn how to cook delicious meals on a camp stove, they will learn to read maps to get from place to place, and they will learn how to pack their backpacks well and set up a sturdy tent that will keep them warm and dry through a thunderstorm. Students will also learn leadership skills like communication, judgment, decision making, and self-awareness. As students hike from camp to camp carrying their backpack and overcoming obstacles, they will get to know the other group members and their stories, they will learn the skills needed to live comfortably in the wilderness, and they will have fun with their peers who have also chosen to challenge themselves and try something new.

Who: 7th-12th Grade
Dates: Aug 2-8, 2026
Application Deadline: May 9th
Cost: FREE
Notes: Open to tribal members and descendants only
Please contact Mrs. Jensen or Mrs. Polson for the application

Our Saber Science Squad incorporates real world issues into their instruction each week. From experiments and simulations to dissections and place-based learning, they make the natural world come alive every day. The science team meets to collaborate each week to create meaningful lessons for our middle schoolers. In 6th grade, Mr. Bauer strives to build meaningful relationships with students. He's always willing to take time to listen and help students grow as humans, not just students. New to LMS this year, Miss. Derby in 7th grade, is quickly becoming known for hosting exciting experiments that deeply engage students in scientific concepts. Seventh graders are enjoying her hands on style of teaching. Mrs. Jorgensen helps students develop responsibility and pride in their work. Her well-structured classroom works to incorporate multiple learning styles while building the skills 8th graders will need to be successful in their upcoming transition to high school. We are proud of our Science Squad and the work they do to support all students!

The first Saber Spotlight of 2026 celebrates our marvelous math team! Our LMS math teachers bring the concept of team work to a whole new level as they work to align instruction and assessments to state standards each week in their content team meeting.
Mr. Meyer is new to his 6th grade math position this year. He passionately believes in helping every student strive for their personal best each day in the classroom. Mr. Meyer continuously works to improve his instruction by researching new ways of doing things and develops the character of his students as well as their math skills.
Mrs. McGilvray builds time for fun into 7th grade math by incorporating games and hands on experiences that bring real world math to life, keeping students engaged and moving forward each day.
Mr. Crego braves the task of preparing 8th graders to enter high school. Mr. Crego's calm demeanor helps students focus on the task at hand, while his superior content knowledge sets the tone for high expectations for all students.

This week LMS celebrates our three school support stars! Special education coordinator, Mrs. Sjo, and school counselors, Mrs. Jensen and Mrs. Polson. Mrs. Sjo spends her days supporting teachers and students, while upholding the law regarding special education services. She never hesitates to jump in and help wherever help is needed. We are grateful for her flexibility and expertise! In addition to her very full time role as school counselor, Mrs. Jensen also sponsors the LMS Student Council and co-teaches the 8th grade enrichment class. Her friendly energy and willingness to do what needs to be done to help students is evident in all she does. Finally, Mrs. Polson is actively involved in all areas of LMS and is often a first line of support in responding to student conflicts. She also has the complicated tasks of creating schedules for our entire student body. She works hard to understand each student's personality to be as accommodating as possible. Mrs. Polson is always accompanied by her trusty sidekick, George.
LMS appreciates these three school support providers and the work they do to help our students and our stuff be successful!
